To Death:
- Describe the form and structure off the poem.
- Finch’s 16 line poem is essentially just 8 rhyming couplets. They break themselves off into 3 groups almost in the poem being: lines 1-6, 7-12, and 13-16
- Which details personify death? What is their effect? With what attitude does the speaker apostrophize death? What does she request of him?
- Death is personified as being very powerful, more powerful than any human. She calls death a “King of terrors” and later goes on to tell how he brings on fevers and contagious diseases to people. The speaker obviously shows fear in death, because it is so powerful. It is also said that he kills with a scepter and once they are dead he holds them in his arms, his prey. She does not want to die a painful death to she requests to die peacefully.
- Paraphrase each of the three sections of the poem: lines 1-6, 7-12, and 13-16. Use one sentence for each couplet. This time, change all figurative language to literal rather then retaining the apostrophe and personification.
- Section 1: Oh terrifying king who everyone must obey. Everyone has to die, even God himself. I am even destined to die.- Section 2: I am not afraid to die, but am afraid of the fevers, contagious diseases, and other agonies of death.- Section 3: I will die whenever I am destined to. My job is to die and yours to kill. Please kill me gently.
